Jane Rosen | Wild Life
April 7 – May 7, 2011
Opening Reception: Saturday, April 9, 2011 3 – 5 PM
Artist Biography
Living on a rural ranch near the central California coast Jane Rosen encounters wild life on a daily basis, including foxes, deer, bobcats, ravens, hawks, chipmunks, and mountain lions. For a born and bred New Yorker raised on minimalism, encountering this endless interplay of animal life and the larger forces of nature was transformational.
Using animal forms Rosen seeks to understand human nature through direct observation of animal nature. Whether working with glass, stone, or her specially developed marble mix, Rosen combines figuration and abstraction to reduce the forms to that which is essential, creating a spiritual quality that resonates throughout. This body of work traces Rosen's process from watching, to drawing, to the completion of the final form.
Jane Rosen is the recipient of the 2010 Purchase Award from the Academy of Arts & Letters Invitational Exhibition, New York, NY. Her work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, California, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York, Brooklyn Museum, New York, as well as in the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, Iraq.
