Artist Biography

Paul Pratchenko creates paintings that conjure memories and dreams of the real world.  Since his retirement from teaching art at San Francisco State University, he has enjoyed exploring the idiosyncratic nature of everyday events through the observation of ordinary activities. This new freedom has given him the opportunity to explore emblematic representations of remembered situations going back to his early work of the Sixties and Seventies.

Pratchenko intends his narrative paintings to be simple, honest, and direct.  He attempts to provoke questions and provide answers regarding the human relationships between appearance and reality.  Conceptually he is interested in the interface between wilderness and human habitation, and achieves his goal in working with these concepts. 

Paul Pratchenko was Professor of Art, Painting, and Drawing at San Francisco State for thirty years, beginning in 1978.  His work appears in many public and private collections.
