Artist Biography

Dennis Luedeman takes his artistic cue from simple steel forms. He manipulates his materials using techniques such as repetition and patterning onto solid volumetric shapes. The outcome is a feast for the eyes. Luedeman offers up visually arresting works that simultaneously haunt as they intrigue. Luedeman's steel sculptures bend slightly, then dramatically, and sometimes look as though an iron fist has punched right through the middle. These subtleties in shape clue the viewer into the material's durability and likewise, to the artist's undeniable dexterity.

Luedeman says "the creation of this work is an exploration of the possibilities or manifestations that can be generated with some very simple processes, such as the manipulation of surfaces, edges, textures, volumes, and negative spaces." Luedeman lets his intuition inform the eventual shapes that his sculptures will inhabit, rather than beginning with a specific endpoint in mind.

Luedeman's art encourages active interaction: navigating around the work, noting the sun's reflection on a gentle curve, or how some small surface appears matte in a cast shadow is where the complexity and interest of his steel structures are developed. Luedeman says "this interaction with the forms and materials is my primary reason for making this kind of sculpture."

Dennis Luedeman received his B.A. from the University of Washington, Seattle, WA and his M.A. from the Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, NY. He is a recognized craftsman who frequently collaborates with architects and designers in the San Francisco Bay Area.
